On topic, what is the rationale for whispering? I've never whispered when holding normal conversations in foreign countries and don't see the need in regular circumstances.

Self imposed ( by the Gurus, self appointed of course ) that have decreed what is " proper and polite". example we all are thought in the US not to belch after a meal yet in other cultures it is a compliment to the host when you belch after a meal !
Do what is comfortable, try to adapt to the Romans when in Rome !
