I'm not sure if it is a US govt requirement on the US airlines, or more just a policy of US airlines. In either case there's no excuse for KLM to copy such nonsense.
I do think the copper thing is a bit much, if true. I was asked to remove power cords and put in a separate bin, too. Also curious if the op was speaking Dutch or English during his/her fiasco?
This is a Schiphol thing and they do it even on short Schengen flights, not just USA flights. There's a thread about it here somewhere. I just flew AMS-LYS yesterday and they required that I pull out every cable, mouse, device, etc. out of my laptop bag. I've not seen this at any other airport in the world.
