Unfortunately, you don't have too many options. Air New Zealand flights from Akl. Even then, I'm not sure that would be a valid routing.

Hawaiian flights from HNL, would be the shortest route, but it seems you can't redeem United miles on these flights, only inter-island.

I looked at LAX to PPT Star Alliance. LAX to AKL on Air New Zealand is very tight there are also a flight from SFO to AKL very tight. Each flight had one coach ticket on the day of travel. There were no award tickets from AKL to PTP. Air New Zealand flies Monday, Wednesday and Friday AKL to PTP and returns on the same dates. The other days flights are on Air Tahiti. There are two or three levels of coach one has no checked bags. The best coach seating for two round trip was about $800.00 round trip.

I am looking at Delta using Air France Code Share two free checked bags about $1,350 per person once a week on Sunday inbound and outbound.

Hawaiian Airlines has once a week Round trip on Saturday for about $1,250.00 with two free checked bags. The routing LAX to HNL to PPT. The return flight leave about 11 PM. I would have to hang around PPT for about 14 hours.

The Air France/Delta flight leaves at 7:00 AM on the inbound non-stop.
