Cheapest route to fly on a big bird in J?
BKK-HKG, Thai A380, Emirates flies an A380 on this routing as well. $400-550 one way in business class, a little under $700 one way in first. Only a little over 2 hours flying time (did this in December with Thai but I was connecting through BKK), but you would get access to the lounge and spa at BKK in F with them as well.

Otherwise, look for a sale from Europe to the US, should be able to get a round trip in J under $2000 if flexible on the origin points and dates and could try multiple planes that way.

And a 787-9 is hardly a small plane .
