Also, I was checking the different economy fares on evaair.com Looks like V and Y fares is a big price difference! Y is $550 more than V. So I'm assuming to upgrade.. I'm looking at $550 extra plus 30k miles. However, if upgrades are not available... I would be $550 out of luck (unless I ask for a refund which would cost $100 then rebook if V is still available? )

If all of the above is true.. I think this is $$$.. Bc you can redeem 80k for J award seat. Am I missing something?
It is UA 30000 miles to upgrade to J. (http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...rade/saua.aspx) Y and B are economy class. K is elite class. Y, B and K are not the cheapest airfare.

Buying V class on EVA does not give you UA miles. K, Y and B give you 100% of miles at least by end of February.

You can use 80K for J seat, but you won't get award miles to reach premier status. It is your call to see which option is more valuable.

My strategy for using UA miles to upgrade to EVA J is:
1. See how much extra money for me to buy one B class ticket.

2. Call EVA before I purchase the ticket. Ask them if they have "using UA miles to upgrade to J" seats for the flights I have in mind. (Give them some days.) If they are able to confirm, I will purchase the ticket immediately. Normally they can even tell you how many seats are available for upgrade by using UA miles. Once I have EVA ticket number, I go to United.com to apply upgrade. Do it fast.

3. For SFO-TPE, the afternoon flights have more seats for upgrade. On days when there are two midnight flights to TPE, there are more seats for upgrade. I would not use United.com to check upgrade availability. United.com only shows award ticket (80K). It does not reflect upgrade inventory accurately. Although if you see award seats on the flight you want, it is likely that upgrade is available as well.
