It has always been my understanding that it is not acceptable to take things such as blankets. I believe an airline would view stealing a blanket much the same as a hotel would view stealing a towel or pillow - ie, it is theft.
I think that would be true, but I think they must take it into consideration that a fair few would go walkies.
