As an Australian passport holder I have not had that problem for some time with UA when flying to the USA.
I can now check in and receive my boarding passes on line 24 hours before departure whereas previously I could only check in at the airport
I was under the impression that the UA system therefore now 'marries' your passport data with that from issuer of the ESTA and there is no need to enter any ESTA details (not that there ever was the facility to do so) on the UA site.
