I live near DAY and have driven to IND, ORD, CMH and DTW both for lower fares and due to award seat availability. I quite frequently will fly out of CMH if the fare is lower as it's only about a 60 minute drive compared to 25 minutes to DAY from my house. CMH often has more award options, IME.
ORD is about 5 hours, IND about 2 hours, and DTW about 3 hours - I haven't done those very often. It depends on the magnitude of the savings, alternative award options, timing, and other factors. Though I'd probably not venture out further than the distance to ORD.
I'm guessing you might be from around Xenia. I used to drive up 68 through there to get to DAY. I found it was almost as quick to take 62 through Courthouse and go to CMH, which was a better airport for me.
I haven't flown to or from Ohio in three or four years, but it used to be a great place for cheap fares. I even used the Akron airport a couple of times, even though it was out of the way, as I had no real reason to ever be north of Columbus. I remember half the people flying in and out of Dayton actually lived in Cincinnati. It was way cheaper to connect in CVG than to fly from there.
I kind of miss being in Ohio, although given the weather not at this very minute.
