How far would/do you drive for a low airfare?
I'm sure we all would walk a mile for a Camel, but how far would or do you guys drive to get a cheap airfare?
I live about 80 minutes from the Memphis airport, so that is my main choice for flying. Fares have eased up a bit since Delta de-hubbed, but historically the Memphis fares are high. So in the past I've driven from 2.5 to 3.25 hours to get to JAN, BHM, HSV, or LIT to fly when there were no cheap fares out of Memphis.
In addition, from time to time there are some really low fares out there; Memphis is never included. So over the years I've driven six hours to STL to buy four $219 r/t tickets to Belize; 10 hours to ORD to buy two $300 tickets to HNL; 10 hours from Northern Kentucky to EWR to buy four $260 r/t tickets to CGN; and so forth. I learned about all of these fares on the Flyertalk Mileage Run board, by the way.
I lived in Kentucky for several years and have worked off and on in Ohio for about 15. I used to drive an extra 90 minutes to fly cheaply out of Dayton, and have even driven right through Cincinnati, to IND when that was the only low-far option.
Like many people, a few times I've flown on one ticket to reach an international gateway and then have taken my ultra-cheap fare to Europe. I try to fly in a day early, to ensure that a delay or cancellation doesn't cause me to miss my T/A flight.
Obviously the decision to drive a further distance is influenced by the fare difference. I'll drive an extra 90 minutes to save $150 if traveling alone, and if traveling with family or a friend will make the trip for less. For a super-cheap Europe or Hawaii fare I'm willing to go to great lengths.
These days my wife gets free gas with her company car, so there is no mileage cost involved. I have found that there is a tendency to underestimate the extra cost of pre- and post-trip travel to get to a low-fare hub, and try to be careful not to take advantage of false economy.
Anyway, how many of you are willing to do a little extra driving for fare savings, and at what level do you decide to do so? How many of you have done serious driving in order to take advantage of an ultra-low fare for a family vacation?
