I was hoping to be upgraded to the base suite level, though that might be pushing it too far. Thought I might ask since there are 3 people total in the room. Though I've also heard you sort of get a pick between suites, or river view rooms because the suites don't face the Bund.
Thankfully we'll be there the week after Chinese NY.

There are definitely suites with a riverview in various configurations, but some do not, so determine whether the space or the view are most important The river view suites of the new tower are in the corner of the floors. Chinese NY is very dead in Shanghai, not a good time to visit, lots of restaurants etc are closed, taxis more difficult. Ask to see the suites in the old building, they are apartment sized rooms and really nice. We were lucky enough to stay there before the tower was completed . That said, all rooms are beautiful, and the bund view is really something special. Take lots of pictures of sunrise and night views. We are headed for a repeat stay at the end of the month and looking forward to it.,
