When you call in to add someone to the reservation, how do they verify that the caller is the person making the reservation? I recall making such a call once (to the hotel) and I just gave them the reservation number and told them XYZ would arrive before me and could they please give her the key to one of the rooms (we had two). I don't recall any verification beyond me knowing the confirmation number and my name.
How would an evildoer know your confirmation number AND name, not to mention that you have a reservation at a specific hotel for a specific night?
And even if someone somehow guessed all that, you'd know when you check in that someone has checked in.
And they'd need to have an I.D. to receive the key.
What's more likely, and something that certainly happens from time to time, is you mistakenly get a key to an already occupied room, or someone else mistakenly gets one to your room.
