Last time my son was investigating fares for his trip to SA, Etihad and Qatar both allowed 30kg in economy. Their fares at the time were about two-thirds of the BA direct fare but a journey time of about 50% longer. His view was he was fed and watered, watched a couple of extra movies, had extra luggage and saved £250 so to him it was a no brainer.
Also might be worth waiting a bit to book if only for 2016
We won't need to worry much about baggage allowances, but I will still keep an eye out! I'm currently only researching and budgeting, as we're needing to make a decision on whether we sign up or not.

I was looking at tier-points and was thinking whether it be worth for me just to pay my flight and go WT+? We'd get 400tp just on that trip and if my dad books a business trip on my card - I can get Silver, therefore getting all the perks...

Because it will be on a household account, I can transfer the avios to him from his trip and it should all work out.

All in all it would cost an extra £200, but I think it would be worth it...
