Cape Town Flights - BA or not?

In 2016, me and a friend are looking to go to Cape Town on a volunteering project and flights are not included.

BA have quote around the £900 mark, and for someone on a budget, this is quite expensive, especially as this is only World Traveller. Although I'd be using my dad's airmiles, it could prove a problem for my friend and I am happy to use a different airline.

Etihad are quoting £100 less, although there are two connections. Alternatively, I've heard people on these trips get discounts for airlines. How likely is this and how much would be discounted.

Apart from it being direct, what are the advantages of flying BA to Cape Town other than that it's direct?

Thanks, James.
