Say, in hotel program X, you stay

- 25 nights in a year: you are gold
- 50 nights in a year: you are platinum

We can say most programs work like this; so far it is clear. For this example, let's assume you get status by actually staying in hotels.

However, where I lost the line is how do you maintain status in the next year and the year following that...?

Do you have to stay 10, 25 or 50 nights every year, or fewer nights, or simply using the credit card you maintain status? (No card here.)
Note that some hotel programs allow you to qualify for status based on stays rather than nights, typically 25 stays instead of 50 nights. In comparing programs, note that some but not all count cash and points or even award (free) nights toward status. There are also different rules about whether particularly cheap rates (such as price line or group bookings) earn nights/stay credit, points, or elite benefits. Finally, be aware that 50 nights or Gold/Platinum/Diamond benefits are not uniform across programs. Be sure to compare these as well as checking whether the chain has suitable properties in locations you need.
