Sometimes even on a route which generally performs and sells well they've not sold enough seats to break even on the flight operation. If there would say only be 20 passengers on the plane they are not going to do the flight. Its cheaper for them to rebook them on their own flights and on other airline flights than it is to fly the plane. Very common in the airline business. So they cancel for a day.
To the best of my knowledge there is no merit to this theory for flights cancelled in advance the way this one was.
