on 5/25/15 flight from Munich to LHR, not sure what is the best way (train) to get to the Munich airport from hotel

I think you will find the Bayern-Ticket to be your friend. For €28, the two of you can travel anywhere in Bavaria for a day on public transit, local, and regional trains (but not express services, like RJ/EC/IC/ICE), including to and from Salzburg, Nürnberg, and Füssen. For your trip to the airport, you can opt for the slightly cheaper Group Airport-City-Day-Ticket, good for the two of you to get anywhere in Munich, including the airport, for €22.30.
