I think if they did something like HKG-LAX-JFK, they wouldn't have the right to carry passengers from LAX to JFK. If it is flown outside of the U.S., I think they do.

Think of KE with their LAX flight to Brazil. MH a long time ago had a flight to MEX from LAX.
