Thumbs up Food in Thailand

Thai food had never really been my favourite international cuisine but after a little prolonged experience the region I think I could get used to it!

My first ever taste of Thai cuisine had actually been in a cool food and beverage chain in Singapore called Thai Express. I didn’t eat much there on that occasion, but I began to realise, especially after reading a great blog entry at Migrationology by Mark Wiens, that it was a cuisine that I was willing to try again properly next time I was able to visit Thailand!

Now, as I have travelled to Thailand a few times over the recent years, I have become more and more adapted to the cuisine over there, especially the street food and desserts.

I am wondering which parts of Thai cuisine you would most remember fondly, or that you would suggest to a first-timer. Much of the cuisine is hot and spicy, but there are some fantastic roast and grilled meats on offer, not to mention an adequate supply of veggie options.

Sai Ua (sausage), Kai Yang (grilled chicken), Khao Phat (fried rice), and Khao Niao Mamuang (mango sticky rice) are my favourites, and I cannot get enough of them when I'm back in the Kingdom.

Thai food is known as being incredibly spicy and with the country being flanked on either side by ocean, seafood is a big staple food. Thailand’s cuisine is influenced by other regional cuisines such as from Myanmar, China, and India. Typically, Thailand, like most other nations in the world, has also been ‘Americanized’ somewhat with the relentless appeal of burgers and donuts on sale in malls, especially in touristy areas in Bangkok and in the south of the country in places such as Ko Samui and Krabi.
