Lets say I buy a B fare on either carrier (or DL for that matter)
I try to apply an eupgrade, and there are 10 SEs on Y fares in front of me, or there are 10 1Ks on Y fares in front of me, how is that different?

The only difference is with AC, you never have a clue where on the list you are.
How would you know that there arent 20 people on he AC upgrade list?
