I use my UA # to get E+ (I bought a global E+ subscription) and use my UA miles to get upgrades, but any time before OLCI I can switch back to AP to credit back to AP. Works well for me.

If you want to switch seats on E+ then you need switch back to UA # so you can do it without charge.
