UPDATE: 1/6/2015.
Happy New Year folks. UA customer service has informed me that they will be refunding the 2 onerous taxes collected. They could not clarify if/ how/ when the system would be updated to differentiate between a child, adult or OAP flying on an award ticket, but did say that more supervisors are being trained to handle the inquiries.
