That is hit and miss. Sometimes I have just flashed my Gold card and been given access, however today they were being super strict and turning people away who didn't have an invitation. Probably due to the huge crowds. I may have been able to bluster my way in, but was thankful that the escort had passes and I didn't have to.
But yes under normal circumstances there's not much value in this service at LHR, unless you like being greeting by a smiling face who chats with you on your walk to arrivals. I'll be interested to hear about how things work at other airports.
