OP what time did you arrive to re-check your bag?
Your flight took off at 8:44am so I would say what time were the boarding doors closed or listed on the BP? 8:30am?
Hello,
Sorry for not replying earlier. I was on another international trip ...
We were off the plane at around 6:50am and cleared customs by 7:20am so had a good one hour plus.
What's annoying is that United books you on flights where its not possible to allow the interline baggage transfer. I only had the one bag and no children in tow otherwise I'd never have made it. I also don't know what someone in the 60s or 70s would do.
I made the title of the thread referring to United now being a Point to Point budget carrier because in the early days of these carriers you literally had to handle your own bags if your flight contained a connection!

They had a couple of hours between flights. They were told the conveyor belts were down. No porters available/willing to help.

So I wrote to United and asked them to explain if this is a new procedure. I've done this trip many many times on 839 and 863 and always used the interline baggage transfer. Plenty of times I only had 90 minutes connections.
At the very least they should warn people when purchasing the ticket: "if you book your flights with 90 minute connections or less you must be willing to transfer your own baggage between terminals". That way I can plan accordingly (no checked bags, don't book if children in tow ...)
