I've wondered the same. A few years ago on thai air from LHR to BKK during the flooding they had, the economy cabin was fairly empty, and i spread myself across all 3 spare seats i had, especially due to having no in flight entertainment!
nobody bothered me during this, although it wasnt particularly comfy for me!
