Spending a lot of nights away in hotels means sometimes I prefer to order a takeaway so that I can enjoy a mix of hotel restaurant, hotel bar snack, room service, eating out and take away.

I think simply ordering a take away to hotel of any star rating is acceptable from what I have seen and I have had no issues with this-many hotels have takeaways advertised but the issue is when cutlery etc is required.

I guess protocols could be:-

- unacceptable
- depends on hotel rating
- yes but bring your own plastic cutlery
- yes just nick from restaurant :-)
- yes call room service but expect a tray charge
- yes call room service no charge just discretionary tip...alla ice
- yes ask reception if you can grab some from restaurant

Would be interested in opinions and recent experience!

Thanks,

Full service hotels rely on and need, to some extent, the extra income from food and beverage sales. These hotels are not going to support you bringing in food from outside or alcohol and obviously will not provide plates/cutlery.

If 4* and above with restaurants and in-room-dining service, you normally need do this under the hotel radar, have own plates/dishes/cutlery. Of course flying these days mean if no hold baggage you can't carry own cutlery with you. I think a fair number of knives/forks/spoons nowadays dissapear from breakfast service, suggest you buy some plastic plates for your luggage!

Hotels such as HIE, especially HIEs where no food is available outside breakfast period are often very supportive, providing front-desk literature for local pizza and other restaurant delivery telnos (and takeaway menus) and provide microwave ovens to heat up supermarket ready meals.
HIE may (or may not) require you eat in restaurant table area to keep rooms from smelling of food.

Longterm places like staybridge are yet another level with included kitchen with microwave/hon/toaster/plates etc etc
