Wrong. You can expect what each airline tells you can expect out of their FF program. Few airlines upgrade their elite members for free on such flights.

United, if you read the information available to you, clearly states complimentary upgrades across the Atlantic and Pacific are not a benefit. If you want to sit up front, you must use a combination of miles (and usually) money to upgrade, or pay cash to upgrade. If you get to 1K status, you can earn Global Premier Upgrade certificates, which can be used to upgrade TPAC or TATL.
