Four minutes after police in Shanghai said the Bund area was full and advised locals to go elsewhere for their New Year’s celebration, a stampede erupted late Wednesday.
Just before the stampede began, the Shanghai police department posted a picture on its official social media account on Weibo.com showing the Bund area filled with people coming to celebrate the New Year.

In many ways, these tragic events symbolize what China is at the moment and what it has become since the Cultural Revolution and the system behind it almost destroyed the ancient Chinese civilization
Sad new year for the parents and relatives of the mostly young, female victims.
The hope remains that some lessons will be learnt from this both in practical and more philosophical terms.
