For the extra cost of a flexi ticket I would take the 4 hour wait in AMS. It not actually that bad. I pop into AMS for a couple of hours if I have a long wait. The 4 hours have often ended up saving me if the flight to AMS is delayed. I usually aim for a 4-5 stop just in case.
