BA have acted correctly here - yes - but they are being on the unhelpful side. Had the award flight left him arriving too late to make his AMS-LHR flight I suspect they would have been more flexible.

Incidentally, for future reference AMS-MAN/MAN-LHR is available and the MAN-LHR leg counts as a free domestic - and that's all one booking.
