There is also a Hilton Garden Inn on opposite sides of a big interchange by there, and a Hampton next door to the Hilton. I haven't stayed at those.

It is reasonably good for a Hilton by US standards, it has a lounge, and rooms facing the airport have a view down towards T7.

To be honest, over the years I've come to the view that because of the speed of the LIRR from Jamaica, you may as well stay at a hotel within striking distance of Penn Station in Manhattan, the time saving for being near to the airport isn't massive. It's about 35 / 40 minutes from Manhattan, and 20 minutes plus to these hotels.
Many thanks - that's helpful. Do you also find that the options at JFK are very disappointing for a major international airport even taking into account its location?

I agree about staying downtown but I'm usually arriving latish into JFK prior to taking the early day flight back to LHR so I feel more comfortable staying near the airport just in case there's a problem with early morning transport from Manhattan.
