I got into the habbit of trying to use stopovers to get availability. For example, I once got a low BE ticket to SIN because I was willing to send two nights in Tokyo on the return. The consequence of this change in pricing practices means generally higher mileage ticket prices to repeat the kind of thing you mention above.
