I got into the habbit of trying to use stopovers to get availability. For example, I once got a low BE ticket to SIN because I was willing to send two nights in Tokyo on the return. Also, if I must do an overnight connection, I often prefer to make it a full day or two rather than just seven hours to sleep in some airport hotel.
