What European destinations don't require LHR?
I've been traveling since 2009, but only 2-3 trips a year, so milage accumulation has been slow. But now, for the first time ever, I finally have enough miles to actually book a rewards flight for both my wife and I! So I start looking into flights to Europe, because that would be great to get a "free" flight to somewhere that would normally cost ~$900/person to fly to.
So imagine my surprise when I start looking around and click through a few destinations to see what the actual fees are going to be. I'm thinking maybe $50, $100 tops. Nope, $700! PER PERSON! What? That's almost full price! lol
After snooping around on google I discovered that it's because of British Airways, and that if you can find flights that don't go through London, you actually can book a decently priced flight.
But I'm struggling to find out which destinations are actually feasible without going through London. So far all I have found is Milan and Dusseldorf. It's daunting trying to search each city individually though, so I figured I'd ask:
Does anyone have a full list of possible destinations in Europe to book with rewards miles that wouldn't have a layover in LHR?
Also would not be opposed to going to South America, Africa or Asia instead, if anyone has suggestions on destinations that don't have high fees like LHR and require about the same amount of miles as a European flight would.
*Edit: Guess I need to update my location. Ideally would like to fly out of PWM (Portland, ME), but I realize that isn't usually feasible for international flights, so mostly looking for stuff from BOS, possibly JFK if absolutely necessary. Thanks for any help/advice!
