Delta Dynamic Pricing and Invetory Controls by Day of Week
We all know Delta fare prices differ by the days of the week we choose to fly, but would you believe the day of the week you buy your ticket has an effect on the price as well? At this point, you're probably saying "Well.. duh, dude!".
I've been conducting a series of experiments and have gathered data which shows Delta dynamically contracts and expands pricing inventory based on certain days of the week by dynamically eliminating lower fare class inventory and then making it reappear the next day.
Example:
19 JAN 2015 | ATL-PDX | DL 887
21 JAN 2015 | PDX-ATL | DL 2189 DL 1218 (via SLC or LAX)
** Flight numbers are included by they were not necessary as ALL ROUTINGS to / from origin / destination were effected.
On FRI 26 DEC 2014 - X fare was lowest available $496.70
On SAT 27 DEC 2014 - X fare was lowest available $496.70
On SUN 28 DEC 2014 - T fare was lowest available ~$560
On MON 29 DEC 2014 - X fare was lowest available $496.70
Aside from a bunch of comments to the effect of "Duh, did you not know this" and "Hey I always suspected they did that"... does anyone find this odd or have any insight into whether or not Delta is purposefully doing this in an attempt to squeeze our wallets on the days we're most likely to be sitting down to book tickets for the upcoming weeks?
