I used KVS tool to check availability, I was traveling in J and wanted to upgrade to F on the A380. There were 2 seats available in F, so I went through the process online. Nothing happened so I called up Privilege Club, they said "sorry sir, I can see you requested an upgrade but there are no seats available, please check closer to the flight". Two days later I received an email with my new seats in F. I honestly think the staff are told to always say there's no availability. This was for flight on 19th October, for which I requested end of August. I think it was the last time I've ever seen any award availability for F.
