I haven't flown F before on AA, but the J seat on the 77W is pretty amazing. My most recent flight was MIA-LHR and I was in 3A, so could see the F cabin easily. There isn't much difference IMO between the two hard products (not sure about the soft product). The blanket duvet provided is miles ahead of the BA offering, although the pillow was a little flimsy (still superior to CW).

My only slight gripe about the seat is that it is difficult to find a comfortable position for the seat whilst dining.

Result we are now faced with either £450 extra to get into J on BA (which is a pain given their was no price difference at time of booking) or put up with the old style seat.

I doubt that such an aircraft change will happen on the JFK route but its worth remembering that airlines can change schedules/aircraft type.
That's what happened to me on my GRU-MIA flight the other week. Originally a 772, then moved to a 77W, then changed back to a 772. I didn't find the NGBC seat that bad (although a 2:15am departure coupled with a busy 5 nights in São Paulo averaging around 4 hours sleep each night morning meant I was quick fast to sleep).
