The platinum alternative was a $10USD voucher per night ($50 total for both rooms) towards food at hotel properties. The vouchers came in handy since the platinum breakfast was only for 2 adults, and our 2 young children (6 and 4) were charged $15 USD each for breakfast. We ran out of vouchers by day 1.75. At the very least they should have given us vouchers for both rooms.

The irony of the whole bit is that internet is disastrously slow because it is free to everyone and very few use roaming on their cell phones (if they even could- verizon doesn't roam in Cayman). They were out of towels 50% of the time when checking (though usually were stocked back up within 15 minutes). All in all, I'm still not sure what I was paying a resort charge for....
