Not really a matter of when or where I want to stay. I just do not understand the justification in paying an annual fee when I will likely achieve gold or higher anyway without a hilton credit card.
Where and when you want to stay does matter as most people get the reserve card for the Gold status and 2 free nights but those 2 free nights alone could be worth as much as 190K points or as little as 10K points
The 50K Visa Signature card doesn't have any annual fee and neither does the 50K Amex , the Amex also allows you to book Axon awards which give you discounted 4 night reward stays
