Why are you saying that ? As far as I know Delta knew VS20 was operating on December 24th until I called them from the airport and told them the flight was not there 3 hours before takeoff.

This ignorance may have been caused by their mistake, or by VS's. In any case I do agree that DL, as the ticketing carrier, had an obligation to know no matter what and they are at least partially to blame.
