Disposing safely of an old non-working iPad 1

Mrs. cblaisd has an old iPad 1 whose screen has stopped working (or the whole thing has stopped working, it's hard to tell!). Santa upgraded her to a newer model iPad and I think I've successfully restored her stuff to the new one.

I know that on eBayeven non-working iPads fetch a few dollars. But what I'm concerned about is that if it is indeed just a screen failure that someone might be able to get into her stuff and somehow facilitate identity theft, hijack her iTunes account, etc.

One site suggesting microwaving the iPad for 5 seconds (!) to ensure fried hardware.

Any suggestions for what to do? Or is the expected net from the sale of a non-working or broken screen iPad 1 just not worth the both and I should just pitch it?

TIA!
