Normally I wouldn't disagree with that statement. However, the date of travel is a holiday and I was anticipating arriving earlier. It's really not a big deal, but past experience has shown me that US Airways has been pretty flexible with the change options in a similar scenario. I should have pointed out that these are award tickets so cancelling/re-depositing and rebooking is a gamble.
