"Connecting flights" in this context covers more than just the above. It also includes some subsequent flights on separate tickets. The protection arrangements agreed to by the airlines are tied to what constitutes connecting flights, through-checking passengers and through-checking baggage across separate tickets for Oneworld flights.

This all has come up before in meetings that the Oneworld alliance reps had in reaching agreements, including with regard to Global Support at airports.
