I do try to match earning to spending to avoid growing a large balance and then being annoyed when its devalued.

As a fellow "earn and burn" [I am clearly learning something] I really do wonder why some people seem to have enormous balances ... and then apparently do nothing with them!
snuffi's point about Avios being worthless if you don't use them is relevant.
