I think a few airlines hold the "good" seats for status/full-fare pax. (AA? US?) Presumably if you buy your tickets after the advance-purchase folks have reserved the "bad" seats you may have to wait or cough up the "good" seat fee.

Of course, if you had flown on a full fare Y or J ticket on BA metal you would have had advanced seat selection available to you.
