2 years ago we did not need it when flying HNL-LAX (stop for many months)-international.

The check in againt saw *something* though because she said that's odd, you don't need a passport to go to LAX. I explained how we had an international flight a few months away on the same itenerary and off we went.

I think you might need it because your stopover is so short.
