simons1, as already noted, BA doesn't expect you to pay it unless you have a) no status, b) want to select a specific seat, c) don't want to wait until OLCI. If you are happy to wait you pay nothing.

We will agree to disagree then. A family of 4 flying business from LGW to the Caribbean could well be paying between £12,000 and £15,000 from heir own pockets.

I find it sad that someone who travels in a ... er ... premium cabin on their annual holidays should be considered in that light.

I find it staggering that they would be expected to spend hundreds reserving seats. Even more staggering that the only reason put forward seems to be that they might upset some frequent flyer type, often flying on someone else's money.
