Yep,
Even when I've done OLCI and printed out my boarding pass, no checked baggage so I never even went to a kiosk or counter, I've had the GA call my name before boarding on the first segment to check my passport. I assume he had to validate it or something.

But YMMV in luck for having to physically have it on the first segment.
