I booked my ticket separately since I wanted to use miles, but for the exact same flight. We called AA to get seats together. My g/f was able to get me a seat right next to her, even though I was no eligible to select it myself.

However, once she got a confirmed upgrade, we're obviously in different cabins now. Is it possible for her to upgrade me as well?

FWIW, we both got upgraded on the flight out, but those tickets were booked together.
If I understand this correctly, you used miles to book your ticket, somehow she managed to get you a preferred seat assignment and now she has been upgraded and you want to sit in same cabin as her. Correct? Since it appears your ticket is an award, have you thought of booking BUS/FIRST class ticket instead of coach? You can not upgrade a award ticket.
