How does OW lounge access get one upgrades?
Having "enjoyed" the OW lounge in LAX, I disagree about "huge". Unless you mean huge crowding. QF and BA lounges are the same.
CX lounges are good though. As others have written, there are cheaper ways than spending $1200 to get into a CX lounge, and besides which in HKG there are other lounge choices you can enjoy by paying a fee at the time.
OP should credit next year's 100K miles to AAdvantage, and get free lounge access by mid year. In the mean time, spend a few dollars buy all day lounge passes as needed or just get an amex plat card, and use the fee credit to drive net cost to $250. Pays for it self on five journeys., domestic or international. In 2016 he can enjoy F class lounges for free.
