I think my wife and I purchased two of the first plastic covers in 1996-97, for our Rimowa Topas carry-on cases.
At least that is what the manufacturer in China told us. We bought the two covers for long-haul flights, and protection pulling both cases in our Winter snow and ice. That seems to work in Europe, but not in North America, unless while waiting in the security line you quickly remove the covers well ahead of the baggage inspection. You do not want to be a hindrance to the security flow for TSA.
Twice flying up from Brasil to North America, we paid for a Carousel " plastic-wrap "around our Rimowa XXL Silver Integral case, which is checked luggage. And twice, once in Miami, and again in Los Angeles, the case came up in baggage arrival with the plastic cut off and away from that case. I had to recover both the case and the cover, and dispose of the cut plastic wrapping.
So our experience is that we no longer use them. Others however may find them useful.
